King High does Remember

Friday was the 10th annual King High Remembers celebration of the contributions of our military veterans and the sharing of their personal history. There were vets from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, etc. I can’t figure out who this event is more important for – our deserving vets, us, or the students. This is history that none of our students are going to “forget” – even if it is not on the test. The fact is that King High does Remember and records much of it on their specialized website for this event.

We should also be thankful for history teacher and department chair, John Corona, and his initial vision and leadership that started with 28 veterans for his 11th grade history classes to interview. That vision with lots of help from others, AND John’s continued leadership has developed into the outstanding program of 2010 with over 200 vets – which is reported on local television as well as other forums.

I was able to finish my day on Friday at the Riverside Marriott with the Military Ball for our JROTC students. They are the next generation and are learning more than “what’s in the book” in the JROTC program. The evening is built on receiving lines, social skill development, esprit de corps, and personal presentation.

  2. American Angel,
I get the sense that your remark is sarcastic, but I could be wrong. I am wondering what you think should be posted. Should district leadership keep reminding wonderful teachers that they may lose their jobs on a daily basis with gloomy posts about the horrific state budget? That would not be inspirational or productive.

  3. This project is so positive at so many levels...It is an amazing and rewarding history lesson for the students, a great opportunity for the Vets themselves to be able to share their experiences, and for our young adults to feel the pride for their country that the men and women of our military have for so many years!

GREAT project!!! As a very proud American myself, I hope it continues for at least another 10 years.

Thank you John Corona....you have reason to be proud of your accomplishment!

  4. Please don't forget the hard work of Carolyn Power, Jalyn Guidangen, Micki Ward, Brad Peters, Melinda Turay and the administration at King High as well. The project is a labor of love for the entire 11th grade team. Others involved in making this program a success each year includes Hattie Byland and John Schreck who have donated money and time to the project as well.

  5. Thank you Mr. Weston for recognizing the 'other' individuals that assist with making the program work. Sometimes they are not given credit for working just as hard. Mr. Corona has done an exceptional job with the program but it takes more than one to put it all together. Thanks also should be given to the men and women that give of their time to bring the veterans to King.
