We have a NEW address, but we aren't moving

Don't know about you, but it seems that many of our colleagues, friends, and neighbors have difficulty with our web address: rusd.k12.ca.us -- which seems difficult to remember and somewhat problematic to type without error. As a result we are implementing a new web address that we hope will be easier for people to find us. We are still located in the same place and everything will still work as always, we just have another way to get there. The new address will redirect from the new site to the existing rusd.k12.ca.us site -- without any fuss or muss. Our new web address, that will redirect you to our website is: www.RUSDLink.org.

Over time we would hope to expand our redirect to an actual renaming of our website using the new domain name (www.RUSDLink.org). Obviously, that has not happened yet, and it will take some work to accomplish that. When that happens (months from now) the website will no longer be the redirect but will in fact be the actual website. In any case, wanted you to be the first to know! Try the new address by clicking on it and then bookmark the new web address.

  1. First, all of the school district web sites normally end in k12.ca.us. Looking at the RCOE school districts page: http://www.rcoe.k12.ca.us/aboutRCOE/districts.html one can see that only two districts do not use the California state standard of k12.ca.us

Second, what about changing all the business cards and emails to the new domain name, is all of this really necessary, especially with the budget constraints?

Third, the redirection of www.RUSDLink.org to rusd.k12.ca.us sometime breaks the current site. If you click on the www.RUSDLink.org from the Rick’s blog, the web site appears, but if you do a refresh, it switches back to the blog.

  2. I thought it was a great idea to switch to RUSDLink.org until I thought about the previous comment regarding changing letterhead, business cards, etc. Now I am not so sure. However, typing the k12.ca.us has always felt weird and I've been typing since I was in the 6th grade- many, many moons ago.

  3. It is possible to have both addresses live, one redirecting to the other. It is not be necesary to print new letterhead and business cards right away. Many companies, and several school districts, have made this same transition over time with good effect. Way to "think outside the box" and arrive at a web address that people can remember!

  4. Aside from the blog, how are teachers to learn and let students know about the new site? Communication prior to the change would be helpful to reduce frustration with technology for some teachers and students.

  5. I don't think that the new address is any easier than the old. If the direction was to go to the site and bookmark it, there is no reason that that cannot be done with the site as it is. I think it is more of a way for the creator to feel they made things easier. RUSD is a K12 organization like the many others out there. Too many choices can create just as much confusion as some think our old web address does.
